Stemming from an investigation into opposing forces – TENSION AND COMPRESSION – and their relationship to each other, the tension bookcase is an engaging representation of the forces required to suspend an object. It is a piece of art as well as a piece of furniture. Both functional and beautiful, the tension bookcase will demand a presence in any room.
The dimensions of the bookcase are 17” wide, 75” long and 60” high. The main supports consist of solid maple members that are connected together with stainless steel tube, press fit into place. The wood and tube elements are held in place by steel cables, which place tension on the main supports to hold the structure up. The maple is finished with an all natural oil sealer called KUNOS, made by Livos, which reinforces and deepens the natural color of wood grain while leaving a satin finish.
The four shelves, constructed out of maple, have an aluminum reveal detailing their connection. The shelves are easily removed to accommodate larger items and showcase objects. The result is a truly breathtaking and unique piece of furniture, complex in its design but elegant in appearance. Each piece is hand-crafted in Ontario to order.
