Video

Feeding Bill Gates a Fake Burger (to save the world)

This is a really interesting video recommendation from Steph! It talks about the impact of meat on the environment but from the view of innovation for change. I particularly like the visualizations he uses to illustrate his points, like the one below. I briefly looked for where it came from, but couldn’t find it, so I’ll have to dig a little more.

Book

Make Good Art by Neil Gaiman

This book is really cute and came out of nowhere (thanks mom!). Neil Gaiman is an author I’ve been reading a lot of recently and Kyle and I watched his Masterclass. This book is a bit different for him and is basically an illustrated speech on why making art (not just pictures though, lots of things are art) is important. It goes along nicely with my drive to find a way back to my artistic self. It’s much easier to say you want to draw or write or –[fill in the blank here]– more than it is to actually do it.

How to Find Out What Google and Other Big Tech Companies Know About You

I went looking for an article like this because privacy is getting to be a bigger and bigger news topic and it can seem scary and overwhelming, but I really don’t think it needs to be. This article has a link to your Google profile that you can take a look at. There’s also an Akimbo Podcast called Surprise and Privacy that has a really good angle. I like that he talks about how we will happily trade privacy for convenience, as long as we don’t get surprised by how they use the information. How do you feel about privacy (specifically on the internet)? Personally I don’t feel like I’m important enough for anyone to care about my data and I’d rather have the convenience in most cases, but I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Story Time

Pig Fell Asleep

I want to try something, and I’m not sure how it’ll work. I wrote the first few lines of a story and I was thinking that you can add to it. You can add a line, a paragraph, whatever you like. You can come back later to add more once other people have tried. Or not. I’m curious to see what we end up with. Might be dumb. Sorry if it is!

Pig was asleep. The creatures of the night were awake, but Pig couldn’t keep his eyes open. He had intended to. His plan was set. His plan was flawless. His plan would have worked…

He would be bat pig! The wings he had imagined sprouting from his back, strong and furry just like the bats in the farmyard would appear. He was going to be the pig that flew.

And now, the Sandman had ruined everything. Pig had been overtaken without his consent, even worse, without his very knowledge. When Pig awoke with a start, the sun had risen, the night creatures had retreated to their lairs, and his brilliant plan had been foiled. Clearly, he would have to improvise. Perhaps, he thought, it might be time to involve some co-conspirators – Bray Donkey, Henrietta Chicken, Neighbour Horse?

Henrietta stretched her wings as she walked down the coop ramp into the morning light. For a young hen mid-way up the Pecking Order, she was doing well. Laying an egg every night, she was trying hard to get her BET (between egg time) down as much as she could, and every week saw modest improvements. A good sign. Pecking her way into the yard she saw Harold Rooster standing on a fence post keeping a keen eye on the surrounding terrain. Old for a rooster, huge and battle scarred, standing in the morning sun, Henrietta was reminded of how he’d saved her life twice before. Once from a hawk and then again from a feral cat that had snuck up on her while she ate blackberries. He had nearly died.

“Going outside the fence again Henrietta?”

“It’s where the berries are.” She replied.

“And the cats.” He grunted, though not unkindly as she saw his tail feathers twitch in a slight smile. “Try near Two Pool spring, I heard the Jay boys talking about a find there.”

Thanking him with a broadly waved smile, she hurried in the direction of Two Pool. It was going to be a wonderful day.

Neighbour horse shook his head as he watched Henrietta scrabble under the fence. He watched her with a mix of admiration and trepidation. How could she leave the relative safety of her enclosure knowing the cats were out there! He wished he had her courage.

Random Tip

Make Your Phone into a Blacklight

Put clear tape on your phone flash, colour over it with blue marker. Put another piece of tape over it and colour it with purple marker. Tada! Blacklight. Now go look at your toilet. Gross.

Can’t wait to hear from you:)

Regarding the Neil Gaiman, which I really enjoyed, I like how you chose the person heading for the mountain illustration. It ties in nicely with the idea in last week’s poem of the individual wondering about the secrets just beyond the crest of that hill.
